The sitter is believed to be the Florentine Fra Jacopo Salviati, a member of the Knights of Malta, recognizable by the white Maltese cross on his attire. The portrait was created shortly after the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. Cavalori was among Florentine artists of his era who sought to introduce greater naturalism into formal portraits.
